Canico, Madeira

The resort of Canico de Baixo is floating on a small outcrop and is separated into two different areas - the customary Old Village built around a fine 18th century church and the main square, and the modern holiday area with its fashionable villas, hotels and holiday homes. The whole area is just right for sunbathing and excellent for hiking, walking and golf, the 18 hole Palheiro Golf Course is a 20 minute drive away.

There's a good selection of facilities including restaurants, bars, a mini-market and a bank in Canico. Nightlife is restricted to hotel entertainment, although there are a few bars in the village. Head off to Funchal for more variety. There is a regular bus service and taxis are gladly on hand to offer a ride.
