Funchal

Funchal, Madeira

Funchal, capital of Madeira about 25km from the airport, takes its name from the wild fennel found by the first settlers in 1419. Home to about a third of Madeira's population, it is located in a sheltered, south facing valley, with a remarkable setting of volcanic mountains. From Funchal steep, cobbled streets wind up into the hills along which you'll find art galleries, antique shops, botanical gardens and wine shops where you can taste the fine Madeiran wine. Funchal is fitting for couples or families with grown up children.

The shoreline is stony and Funchal makes up for its deficiency of beaches with a waterfront lido that is well liked with locals. On the other hand you can take a day trip out to the petite island of Porto Santo, 3 hours by ferryboat from Funchal or a 15 minute journey from the airport. This bleaker island has fine, sandy beaches.
