Sri Lanka Holiday

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is the secret garden of holiday making. However wild, it looks landscaped: where it is cultivated it appears ornamental. Jungle is draped over exaggerated mountains and in the hill country, the land looks more gardened than farmed.

The southwest coast is made up of golden sandy beaches, angled palm trees sprinkled by sea-spray, coming from the ocean rollers which pound the tropical coast.

Sri Lanka is an anima-loving nation and Kosgoda id famous for its turtle hatchery, operated by the Wild Life Protection Society. Also, just a short distance from Kegalle, lies a governmental supported elephant orphanage where baby elephants, many less than a year old, are raised to maturity after being injured or abandoned in the country's jungle.

The lifestyle on the island is fairly slow paced and the Sri Lankans don't have a strong tradition for going out to eat, most of your meals will be taken in to your hotel, where you might like to sample some of the local specialities of Sri Lanka including a selection of curries, tropical fruit and a strong drink called Arrack

The resort of Negombo, locate approximately 35km north of Colombo, was once a fishing vallage and still remains much of its original characteristics with fisherman returning early in the morning with their catches to sell in the markets. Dutch and Catholic influences are widespread, from the canals stretching from Negombo southwards to the many churches which have earned it the alternative title of "Little Rome". The wide golden sands of Negambo's beaches are the main attraction in the resort, appealing to the sun seekers and watersport enthusiasts.

From November through to April hotels organise water activities from the beaches, though sea conditions may limit which watersports are on offer the rest of the year. The nightlife in resorts of Sri Lanka tends to be low key and Negombo is no exception.

Entertainment takes place within the hotels complexes with cultural shows, live music, karaoke and the occasional simple disco. However, in the street adjacent to the hotels in Negombo there are lots of bars and restaurants that are particularly popular in the evenings.
